Today we have an electronic band from the UK called The Whip. These guys have high energy, dance, pop synth that will just make you want to shake your butt! We got to interview them and it was a pleasure. Hear what they had to say.
EpicBull: Hello thanks for taking the time to talk to our EpicBull viewers. Please introduce yourselves to our readers.
The Whip: Hey, I’m Bruce from The Whip. We’re from Manchester in the UK and love playing/DJing at parties, clubs and venues all over the world. We’ve been on tour constantly for four years and played hundreds of shows all over the place. We love visiting new places and meeting new people, being a musician is the best job i could wish for, i love playing a show every night.
EB: I’ve noticed the sound of the band is electronica. In which genre of electronic music would you classify The Whip? Trance? Techno? Ambient?
TW: We give a small, actually pretty minuscule, nod to the sound of Manchester of the past but more so to electronic house and punk funk from the rest of the globe. We love DJs and producers as much as we love bands and i try to approach music with no pretense or rules, when I record I love being surrounded by a huge pile of instruments so I can pick up anything to get a random sound. The walls are falling down more and more between genres and it’s healthy. I love swinging backwards and forwards between man and machine, you can hide a little emotion sometimes! Whatever we do though, it’s got to have energy, we’re still fresh out of the blocks and well up for bouncing about.
EB: What is one thing about The Whip that sets you apart from other electronic bands out there?
TW: Even though i like to approach things with an open mind, we definitely have our own flavor and sound. I love vintage synth which is always keeping the pulse of the sound going, I collect synths too, they get so beaten up on the road, it breaks my heart, they are on a constant rotation in and out of the electronic hospital. A couple have had some serious open heart surgery. Back to the band, we’ve got some nice power from Fee on drums who is a real tough cookie and some tight bass from Hotdog, the rhythm section is great , live especially. I’m not going to blow my own hooter as that sucks.
EB: I’ve noticed that you have some tour dates in Europe, will you or are you planning to ever make it over to the States?
TW: We had a wicked time on tour earlier in the year and drove a huge 9000 mile horseshow around the States, it was a great trip. we met a lot of cool people and saw a lot of great things, probably more than places that Americans even get to see which is pretty nuts. We just had to cancel a few dates over there due to recording commitments. We’re getting our second album ready when we can. We’ve toured so much that it really is time to pull on the musical sleighs reigns and get the touring beast of the road for a bit of rehab.
EB: What is your plan for the next album and when do you expect it to be released?
TW: We’re working on it everyday at the moment in my attic, in a couple weeks I’ll have finished the electronics and pre-production then we’ll rehearse 20 odd songs in a room together till they are all really tight and then nail all the live stuff in a studio to tie the thing up for Christmas. It’ll be out early in the new year. I can’t wait to get some more meat out there, it’s great playing the same songs every night as the crowd is always fresh and different and you can feel the enthusiasm they feel to be hearing the songs, but I’m deffo up for singing a few more newies. We’ve been playing a couple new ones live and they go down really well on fresh ears.
EB: Thanks for taking the time to chat with EpicBull today, do you have any last parting words for our readers?
TW: “Stay out of trouble” – Robocop, part man- part machine.
