Every year seems to have its fair share of odd news, 2008 was certainly no exception. Now we will countdown the Top 10 Odd News Stories of 2008.

5. Partial Embryo Twin

Doctors in Greece who examined a girl, who was complaining of a chronic stomach ache, made a startling discovery. The girl had a Partially Absorbed Embryonic Twin inside her abdomen which was causing it to swell. It is not uncommon for a birth to absorb their twin embryo, but to have one only partially absorbed is a rarity. The embryo had hair and eyes, but not a formed brain yet.

4. Immaculate Shark Birth

Tidbit was the name of a shark that lived at an aquarium in Virginia Beach, VA and died due to complications from pregnancy. When the body of the shark was autopsied, it was shown that the fetus inside was not conceived with a male shark, but rather Tidbit had created the asexual reproduction through a process called parthenogenesis. This was the only second known case of a shark reproducing by these means, the first case was in Nebraska and was considered a one time happening.

3. Feet Float Ashore In Canada

Since August 2007, an odd reoccurance has plagued the beaches of British Columbia. Severed human feet keep washing ashore to the dismay of the beach goers that find them. Scientists have yet to come up with an exact explanation for the phenomenon, but a theory is that they are the remains of bodies that are floating in the ocean. However no one knows what causes them to come ashore on the same beach time after time.

2. Bong Made From Skull

Two teen grave robbers in Texas confided in police that after they had dug up the remains of a grave, they made a bong out of the skull and smoked pot from it. The police didn’t believe the story at first, but when they questioned the second suspect, who threw up his lunch, they knew there was more to the story. The skull actually belonged to a deceased 11-year-old who passed in 1921. The teen who gave the confession served 8 months in jail for abusing a corpse.

1. The Pregnant Man

Definitely the most bizarre story of 2008 was the case of Thomas Beatie. He is a transgendered male who still has fully functional female reproductive parts. After his wife was deemed infertile, Beatie decided to impregnate himself with donor sperm. The story made headlines worldwide as this “male” was pregnant with the first known transgender-produced baby. The result was a baby girl that was born to the couple in June of last year.
